Mary Louise Moss Slater, 87 of Hendersonville, TN passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at the home of her daughter Shari and husband, CJ from complications of Dementia. She was a beautiful soul who was loved by all who met her. Her joy in life was her children. She was “the mom of the neighborhood” when her children were growing up. In her eyes, there was no such thing as too many kids in the house. It was a warm and loving atmosphere created solely by her. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching them grow up. Mary also loved watching birds from the patio in the back yard. She would often try to “talk” to them to see if they would answer her. She spent her retirement quietly at home with her sidekick, pug Kiwi, until she passed in 2023. In her final months, she spent a lot of time talking to the Lord, as they had a close relationship.
She married James Franklin Slater in her senior year of high school. They were married for 46 years. (She held his hand as he also passed from Dementia.) After she raised her children, she decided to go back to work. Her favorite endeavor was working for the Tennessee State Board of Regents for almost 20 years and she loved every minute of it. She retired at age 72.
Mary is survived by her children, Alan (Delaree) Slater, Shari (CJ) Slater Kirker and Tania Slater McMillan; grandchildren, Ryan Purcell, Rachel Purcell, Savannah Slater and Landon Slater; sister, Jane Moss Birdwell and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ellen Marshall Mardis (Johnny) and James Robert Moss (Florence); brothers, James “Jim” Robert Moss and William “Billy” Moss.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Sellars Funeral Home at Hendersonville with Father Jeff Jones officiating. Visitation with the family will be at the funeral home on Saturday, May 3rd from 12:00 PM until service time at 2:00 PM.
