Claude Roger Acuff Jr. was born May 14, 1938, in Middlesboro, KY, and a lifelong resident of Lebanon, TN. Roger Acuff, lovingly known as Grandaddy, transitioned from this life on February 28, 2024 at the age of 85.

To those who knew him best, he was a pillar of strength, humor, and unwavering devotion. Roger’s profound impact on our lives cannot be encapsulated in mere words, but we endeavor to honor his memory by sharing just a glimpse of his extraordinary journey.

Preceded in death by his father, Claude Roger Acuff Sr.; Mother, Gladys Mildred Ashton Acuff; Grandsons, Craig D. Mangrum & Jeremy Dewayne.

Survived by his Wife of 59 years, Patricia Anne Rose Acuff; Children, Tracey L. Acuff, Kimberly D. (Michael) Coghill; Twin-Sister, Shirley Elaine Acuff Bradley; Grandchildren, Andrew (Kelly) Coghill (Children- Ava M., Kyndall F., Noah M. Coghill), Brittany Paige Dickens (Children- Emma G. Rich, Brynlee N. Meacham), Coty & Melissa Coghill (Daughter- Iris L. Coghill).

Roger’s foremost accomplishment, in his own words, was that he belonged to the Lord. His commitment to his faith was evident in his service as a Baptist lay preacher, Sunday School Director, Sunday School Teacher, and Gideon.

Master one-line comedian, he embraced life with a humor that endeared him to all who knew him, yet beneath his wit lay a profound stoicism. As a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he led by example, earning the respect and admiration of all who crossed his path.

An elite athlete from his high school days at Clarksville High School, TN, Roger excelled in sports, earning All-American recognition and a football scholarship to the University of Alabama. His prowess extended beyond the field to include high-level golf, skeet shooting (achieving All-American and World Champion status), and a passion for fishing and bird dog trials.

Roger served honorably in the United States Army as an O5C, Radio Teletype Operator during the Cuban Missile Crisis & Vietnam War.

His love for animals led him to own, raise, and train state champion German Shorthaired Pointers, Vizslas, and English Setters, earning him recognition as a Certified Judge for Bird Dog sporting events.

A lifelong learner, Roger was an Alumni of The University of Alabama & Middle Tennessee State University and was recognized in “Who’s Who” for his achievements in manufacturing management. As an executive for Rock-Tenn Company and a successful entrepreneur, he left an indelible mark on the business world, notably through ventures such as Acuff-Rose Realty and National Store-all.

To his family, Roger was a beacon of love, laughter, and wisdom. His presence filled every room, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our lives. Though he has departed this world, his spirit will forever guide and inspire us.

A small graveside service was held for family members on March 3, 2024, at Barton’s Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your own choosing.
