Six Lebanon Police officers were presented with the Life Saving Award for their heroic actions in a recent semi-truck wreck on Interstate 40 last week.

On August 6 around 11pm, officers responded to a car crash on I-40 at mile marker 237 in the eastbound lanes. Upon arrival, officers discovered that two tractor trailers had a head-on collision, resulting in one death.

According to Chief Mike Justice, one of the trucks involved was overturned and laying in a ditch beside the interstate. The driver of this vehicle was trapped inside, and it was starting to catch fire. Patrol Officer George Pearson approached the vehicle and began trying to extract the trapped driver. Corporal Grant Cothron and Corporal Tucker Robert also arrived on scene and began attempting to extract the trapped driver from the burning vehicle as well. While his fellow officers were attending to the driver, Patrol Officer Adam DiGiacomo was able to successfully put out the fire using multiple fire extinguishers. Sergeant Beau Barnett and Lieutenant Joseph Nokes arrived on scene to supervise and direct the resources during a chaotic scene to help ensure order, efficiency, and safety.

“As a result of these officers’ bravery and disregard for their own lives, the driver of the vehicle was able to be safely extracted and transported to the hospital for further medical treatment. These officers’ bravery and dedication to the Lebanon Police Department’s core values are a testament to their character, the Lebanon Police Department, and the citizens whom they serve. For this reason, they are deserving of the Lebanon Police Department’s Life Saving Award,” Chief Mike Justice stated.
