The first day of school in Mt. Juliet ended without any reported crashes in school zones as police wrapped up day one of the department’s Back-to-School Safety Blitz.
Officers, detectives, and support staff were stationed throughout school zones during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal, focusing on the safety of students, families, crossing guards, school employees, and drivers.
Throughout the day, officers conducted 72 traffic stops in school zones, issuing 50 warnings and 21 citations while making two arrests. Of the citations issued, 15 were for drivers using handheld cellphones behind the wheel.
One arrest involved a 46-year-old Nashville man who had an active Wilson County warrant for failure to be booked and was also driving on a revoked license.
The second arrest involved a 40-year-old Crossville woman who was stopped for speeding in a school zone. Police said she was later found to be in possession of methamphetamine.
Mt. Juliet’s Public Works traffic engineers and traffic signal technicians also monitored school traffic throughout the day, working alongside police to ensure traffic signals operated properly and quickly addressing any issues that arose.
