Saturday, October 15, 10:00am-2:00pm

328 Cedar Forest Rd, Lebanon, TN

Cedars of Lebanon State Park

No Tennessee fall is complete without the crunch of leaves during a brisk fall ride. Come tour the newly-designated western portions of Cedars of Lebanon State Park and Natural Area and see why this area contains one of the most significant cedar glade ecosystems in the United States. Home to a bevy of rare and endangered plants, the glades are recognized as having some of the most extreme habitat conditions in the state. They also host some particularly rare and unique animals, including the streamside salamander, the whitewashed rabdotus land snail, and their flagship flightless grasshopper! On this 8-10 mile loop we will follow graveled roads and make frequent stops to look in on glade residents, including several rare plants and plant communities, discuss ongoing TDEC research and management to benefit these systems, and attempt to find and document their invertebrate residents! Please bring your own bike ready for a gravelly ride, and plenty of water and snacks, and plan to stop at the midpoint to rest and take in some glade scenery. Be sure to wear shoes suitable for bicycling as well as brief hikes into cedar glades abutting the road.

Nashville honky-tonk crooner James Carothers, is best known for his stone-country originals and spot-on impressions of some of country music’s greatest icons. Just prior to the 2020 shutdown, James fulfilled a lifelong dream by making his Grand Ole Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium, receiving a standing ovation from a crowd full of friends and family. Another recent highlight was being selected by Alan Jackson to open his show at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville in 2021, as well as several other dates on Jackson’s “Honky Tonk Highway” tour from 2019 to 2022. In 2015, James left his job at LANL and returned to his native state of Tennessee to pursue a country music career. Shortly after arriving in Nashville, George Jones’s widow, Nancy, personally hired him for his first steady gig at the George Jones Museum.
