Wilson County Schools is very pleased to announce that Mr. Josh Johnston has been named as the district’s Supervisor of High School Instruction.
“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with the different administrators and faculties at the high schools of Wilson County,” says Mr. Johnston. “They all do an outstanding job with our students and communities and I look forward to being able to serve them in my new role.”
He’s no stranger to Wilson County Schools, especially for those at Mt. Juliet High School. Since 2016, he’s served as one of their assistant principals.
“At Mt. Juliet High School, I have had the opportunity to experience just about everything there is in a high school setting. I started in Special Education, have worked with multiple curriculums, have had the opportunity to oversee different administrative duties, and have seen and worked through the challenges that come with preparing students for post-secondary life.”
Mr. Johnston has spent his entire educational career at Mt. Juliet High School. He started in 2008 as an Educational Assistant in the CDC program, then transitioned into the classroom as an inclusion teacher in 2010 before beginning the Comprehensive Intervention Program in 2015.
“He has vast and diverse experience at the high school level. That experience is going to be extremely valuable when he takes on this role,” says Director of Schools, Mr. Jeff Luttrell. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him and understand his vision when it comes to supporting our high school administrators and teachers. He’s going to do an excellent job, and we’re excited that he’s taking over this very important position.”
When it comes to Mr. Johnston’s vision for this position, he says it’s all about preparing students for the future.
“I am looking forward to helping schools create opportunities for every student to grow, learn and have multiple prospects for success after high school,” said Mr. Johnston. “It is essential that our students be prepared to compete educationally and in the workforce.”
He also credits current and past MJHS principals for preparing him for this new role.
“I have worked for three tremendous executive principals (Mr. Mel Brown, Mrs. Leigh Ann Rainey, and Mrs. Beverly Sharpe), each of which have had different leadership styles – and each of which have experienced tremendous success. I have learned a great deal from all three and I am grateful to have had my time with each of them.”
A parent of multiple students currently in our district, Mr. Johnston has no problem staying busy in his spare time.
“My wife and I are enjoying watching our two teenage daughters grow up and participate in school events. Our oldest is a junior at Mt. Juliet High School. She plays on the basketball team and our youngest is an eighth grader at West Wilson Middle School who has had the unique opportunity to participate in the drumline for MJHS because of the displacement from the tornado.”
Mr. Johnston received his Bachelors from Cumberland University in Special Education, and obtained his Masters in Educational Psychology from the University of Alabama. He also received his ED.S in Educational Leadership from Tennessee Tech University.
“I was also fortunate enough to be part of a Governors Academy of School Leadership Cohort at Vanderbilt University.”
