Farmers markets are special because the goods being provided are fresh and seasonal. What is found in the market stalls in the spring is often different from the fall. Also, people have become more interested in where their food comes from, often bringing about relationships between farmers and their customers.

In the middle of the twentieth century, farmers markets moved from produce and reseller markets to farm producer-only markets. They have continued to grow with the farm-to-table movement.
