Thanks to the quick action by partnering contractors, Jones Bros. Inc. and Kiewit Corporation, the necessary emergency repairs have been completed and the Tennessee Department of Transportation has reopened the Exit 210 ramp.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE LIVE TRAFFIC MAP

A bridge spall was reported Friday on the I-65 South ramp over 8th Avenue in downtown Nashville. A spall occurs when years of wear and tear cause the steel beams to rust prompting the delamination of the bridge deck. The compromised deck then causes the top layer of asphalt to crack. Out of an abundance of caution, TDOT crews quickly closed the impacted travel lanes and secured an emergency contract for the necessary repairs.

The team removed portions of the delaminated bridge deck Saturday and repaired two full and one partial depth areas. Crews then poured the concrete bridge deck. To accelerate the work, the department used a high early-strength concrete mix, which allows the concrete to cure quicker.

The concrete cylinders were then tested the next morning. After the new bridge deck passed the necessary tests, Jones Bros. Inc. was given the green light to repave the bridge deck.

With repairs ahead of schedule, paving crews got to work, finishing the job early Monday morning. TDOT reopened the bridge to all traffic around 2 a.m., More than 24 hours ahead of the anticipated work schedule.

UPDATED MESSAGE FROM TDOT 5:53PM:

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is conducting an emergency lane closure of the Exit 210 ramp for I-65 South due to a deteriorating concrete on the bridge over 8th Avenue.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE LIVE TRAFFIC MAP

We were notified of the deteriorated area on the underside of the bridge deck Friday. After further inspection it was determined that repairs were necessary to prevent further deterioration.

The top layer of asphalt cracked due to the damaged concrete underneath it. The bridge is safe to cross, but to prevent further damage to the bridge and vehicles that cross it, the traffic will be shifted to the right lane.

A full closure of the ramp will be implemented Saturday, February 18, at 8 a.m. to make repairs. The closure will remain in place over the weekend. It’s expected to be reopened by rush hour Tuesday morning following the holiday.

Motorists are advised to plan for extra travel time and slow down while in a work zone.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is conducting an emergency lane closure of the Exit 210 ramp for I-65 South on February 17, 2023.

The closure is due to a large pothole on the bridge over 8th Avenue.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE LIVE TRAFFIC MAP

Concrete deterioration has caused a deep pothole to form on the bridge. The bridge is safe to cross, but to prevent further damage to the bridge and vehicles that cross it, the traffic will be shifted to the right lane. The on-ramp from Demonbreun Street onto I-40/I-65 will also be closed to lessen interstate input.

Due to the nature and location of the damage, an emergency contract and possibly a full closure will be needed to make the necessary repairs. TDOT is working to secure a contract while crews implement the traffic plan out of an abundance of caution.

Motorists are advised to plan for extra travel time and slow down while in a work zone.
