Nashville Predators: Loss 3-0
The Nashville Predators were back in action after a night off to take on the Carolina Hurricanes in game 2 of the playoff series. The Preds trailed in the series 0-1 and at the end of this one, they would trail 0-2.
The first period was back and forth of who could take the most penalties. Both teams had plenty of opportunities on the power play. However, the Hurricanes would strike first, and be the only team to capitalize on their power play, as Sebastian Aho scored the first goal of the game. The rest of the period would be a draw. The Preds were behind 1-0 heading into the second period.
In the second, the Predators again had plenty of power-play opportunities. They just couldn’t put them into the back of the net. Juuse Saros continued to give the team a fighting chance as even though the Preds didn’t score a goal, they also didn’t give one up due to Saros’ play. The second period came to a close with the game still 1-0 in favor of the Hurricanes.
The third period saw the Predator’s power-play fail again. In total, the Predators were 0/7 on their power play opportunities. That many opportunities and no goals will make it difficult for any team to win. Late in the third period, Aho scored his second goal of the game on an empty netter making it 2-0 Hurricanes. Then about thirty seconds later the Hurricanes made sure to seal the deal with a Foegele goal to go up 3-0 with under thirty seconds left in the third period. The Predators fell 3-0 and drop to 0-2 in the series. They look to bounce back at home in Bridgestone Arena on Friday.
Nashville Sounds: Win 5-4
The series against the Gwinnett Stripers continued last night as the two teams faced off at First Horizon Park. Gwinnett started off hot as they were up 2-0 by the end of the third inning. Neither team could push across any runs after that until the eighth inning when the Sounds finally broke through.
Two RBI singles from Dustin Peterson and Keston Hiura tied the game at 2 in the eighth inning. The ninth inning would come to a close with neither team able to push across the winning run and they were headed for extra innings.
It took only 1 extra-inning as in the top of the tenth the Stripers plated 2 runs from a Goins triple and a Drew Walters single. The Sounds would have to score two to keep playing or three to win. They ended up winning as Dustin Peterson singled to drive in a run to make it 4-3 and load the bases. Then Zach Green hit a 2 RBI double to finish the game off and the Sounds won 5-4.
Atlanta Braves: Win 5-4
The Atlanta Braves matched up against the New York Mets in the final game of the three-game series. Charlie Morton was on the mound for the Braves. The game was scoreless going into the fourth inning. That is when the Mets put the first run on the board with a solo home run from Villar. The Mets led 1-0.
In the fifth inning, the Braves would match the Mets and more. Heredia singled in a run to tie the game at 1-1. Then Morton would do some of his own dirty work at the plate, as he singled to help add a run and give his team the lead 2-1. Then on a wild pitch the Braves would plate a third run in the inning making 3-1 Braves.
In the seventh inning, the Braves would lose the lead as the Mets hit an RBI double and single to score 2 runs and retake the lead 4-3. Late in the game, in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Braves would push across the tying run with a Contreras single. As the game headed into the ninth inning the score was tied at 4-4. The Braves pitching staff kept the Mets in check and it was up to the Braves bats to bring it on home for the win. A run ends the game, but 3 outs meant extra innings. Ronald Acuña Jr stepped into the batter’s box and the game would be over when he left it. He launched a walk-off solo home run and the Braves won 5-4 (the first walk-off in his career).
Cincinnati Reds: Loss 4-0
It was a tough day for the Reds as they took on the San Francisco Giants. The game was a pitcher’s duel as no runs were scored until the fifth inning. The Giants’ Tauchman hit an RBI single to get the first run in the game. The Giants led 1-0.
They would lead 1-0 all the way until the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, the Giants would add to their lead with a bases-loaded double by Buster Posey that scored all the baserunners. The Giants now led 4-0. That is how the game ended. The Reds were shut out and tallied only 3 hits as a team.
Memphis Grizzlies: Win 100 – 96
The Memphis Grizzlies played for their playoff lives last night against the San Antonio Spurs in the FedEx Forum. The winner moved on to play either the Lakers or the Warriors, the losers were sent home.
The Grizzlies started the game fast. They led 18-4 at one point in the first quarter. The Grizzlies were controlling the boards with Jonas Valanciunas and Jaren Jackson Jr was converting those possessions into points on the other end. The first quarter would come to a close with the Grizzlies leading 38-19.
The second quarter was the biggest struggle for the Grizzlies last night. After jumping out to a 19-point lead in the first quarter, they slowly watched as the Spurs came crawling back. The Spurs made the game closer than what it should have been with a 30-18 second quarter. The Grizz still held the lead at halftime, but now it was only a 7-point lead as it was 56-49 at halftime.
The third quarter was low scoring as both teams put up 16 points and the lead remained in the Grizzlies’ favor. All the Grizzlies had to do was close out the fourth quarter and they would advance to the next play-in game. That is exactly what they did. They only won by 4 points, but a win is a win. They now focus their attention on a familiar opponent in the Golden State Warriors, who lost on a buzzer-beater to the LA Lakers last night as well.
