Mr. Joel Arthur Dermid Jr., known to many as “Papa Joe” passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Joel loved watching his grandchildren participate in their favorite sports and celebrating their accomplishments.

Joel was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Hildreth Jo Crowder Dermid.

He is survived by his daughters Beth (Tom) Harmon of Mt. Juliet, TN, Amanda (Ray) Robinson of Mt. Juliet, TN; brother Lem (Beth) Dermid of Hendersonville, NC; grandchildren Darian (Rachel) Robinson, Thomas Harmon, William Harmon and Langston Robinson.

Born in Henderson County, NC in 1941, Joel lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Illinois, Michigan and eventually “retired” with his family in Tennessee.

He was a graduate of Blue Ridge School for boys and a 1964 graduate of North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. He went on to later acquire a Master of Business Administration degree from Webster University. Joel was an accomplished Civil Engineer and was awarded Engineer of the Year by the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers. He was involved with various professional engineering associations in the numerous states in which he lived. While he specialized in transportation, he was also very instrumental in the early development of Kiawah Island, SC.

Joel was a member of the Mt. Juliet Masonic Lodge #642 and the William G Hill Lodge in Raleigh, NC. In addition, he was a member of the Scottish Rite and was a Shriner.

A Masonic Service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Bond Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held at 5:30 pm with the service immediately following at 6:00 pm.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am with the service immediately following at 11:00 am. Place of service will be announced at a later date.

Flowers will be accepted at the Celebration of Life or donations can be made to the Masonic Widows’ and Orphans’ Home of Tennessee Fund, 100 7th Ave N Suite 1, Nashville, TN 37203.
