Ann Elizabeth Hill, 90, passed away peacefully at home with family on March 9, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Ann Harriman was born in Washington DC, where her dad was a professor at Catholic University and served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy in World War II. In 1945, the family moved to Glen Ridge, NJ, where in high school, she met and dated Greg Hill, her future loving husband of 67 years. After graduating from the University of Vermont in 1956, she spent a year working in NYC in the Lever Brothers test kitchen where she developed her love of cooking. Once she and Greg married, they enjoyed 3 years of service with the Air Force in Texas and New Hampshire.
Over the years, Greg’s career took them to many places around the country. Ann was always up for the challenge of meeting new people, exploring new cities, and making each spot a welcoming home for their 4 children. She, Greg, and the children especially loved their first 10 years restoring their 1790’s stone farmhouse in West Chester, PA. At the farm, she developed a love of gardening, growing acres of vegetables and fruits to can. In 1972, Greg was selected by Lukens Steel to serve with the Presidential Executive Interchange program, and the family thoroughly enjoyed their year exploring Washington, DC. It was a particularly interesting time to be there, starting the year as guests at Richard Nixon’s inauguration and then watching the Watergate scandal unfold.
Ann then began a new career devoted to her love of teaching and focused on special education as the family moved to Knoxville, Wilmington, Cedar Rapids, and Chattanooga. She earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Tennessee Tech. Ann gathered lifelong friends along the way and particularly enjoyed her annual reunions with her UVM Tri Delta sorority sisters. Throughout all their moves, the family always felt at home back in New Jersey with Greg’s parents in Sea Girt, and with the Harriman/Foley families in Deal and Bay Head.
In 2007, Ann and Greg settled into retirement in the Del Webb community in Mt. Juliet and found a wealth of new friends and experiences. They took advantage of Vanderbilt’s Lifelong Learning program by taking 3 courses each semester. Nashville also provided her with great music venues, theater, and art museums, but most importantly – it had a great airport!
Ann and Greg loved to travel, taking hundreds of trips throughout the US and the world. They loved exploring overseas – especially in Thailand, China, Turkey, South America, Bermuda, Spain, and the UK. In the US, they were fans of Road Scholar and Caravan trips, family visits, and weekend road trips with the Music City Miata club and Del Webb Roadsters.
Even more than travel, Ann loved and supported her children Lorrie, Don, Tom, and Joe. They always knew she had their back, and of course, she was a big help with homework! She will also be missed by her grandchildren Samantha, Connor, Lorrie, Greg, Noah, and Taylor, and her great grandchildren Eli, River, and Hayden.
Ann and Greg were blessed with 67 years of a loving, supportive relationship. We will be celebrating Ann’s life in New Jersey later this year with her beloved Harriman family but encourage you to raise a glass at home in her honor.
We are very thankful to Alive Hospice and our daughter-in-law Jeanmarie Hill for their loving support of Ann in her final days.
