Mt. Juliet Police Calls on Residents to Make House Numbers Visible for Faster Emergency Response

In an effort to prioritize the safety of our community and improve emergency response times, the City of Mt. Juliet is calling on residents to ensure that their house numbers are clearly legible and visible from the street.

Building and house numbers play a crucial role not only in everyday convenience but also in the rapid response of emergency services. Minutes can make a significant difference in emergencies, so it is vital that fire, ambulance, and police personnel can swiftly and easily locate addresses.

Section 12-31 of the City Code mandates that buildings must be numbered, with the following specifications:

• All structures in the city with a telephone or mailbox shall display the street number prominently on the mailbox in numbers a minimum of three inches in height.
• If there is no mailbox, the numbers must be clearly displayed on the building or post near the street, ensuring readability from the road.
• The street number should correspond with the address designated by the 911 telephone system.
• For optimal visibility, residents are advised to consider the following when installing or examining house numbers:
• Avoid script numbers or words, as they may be aesthetically pleasing but are challenging to read quickly.
• Choose numbers that contrast with the background, avoiding materials like brass or bronze that may be difficult to see.
• If the house is situated more than 45 feet from the street, display numbers on a fence, mailbox, or another suitable location for approaching vehicles.
• Ensure shrubs, trees, or decorations like flags do not obstruct numbers.
• Make sure numbers are clearly visible from both sides of the house.
