The Mount Juliet High School Dance Team made school history by earning double state championship titles at the Dance Team Union’s State Invitation Competition in December at Ravenwood High School.
They competed against several other high school teams across the state and earned double state championship titles in Small Varsity Hip-Hop and Varsity Spirit Showdown. This marks the first time in Mount Juliet High School history that the dance team has won State Titles.
The team took home first place in all four categories they entered as well as receiving the highest score of the entire competition.
Both of their soloists also earned 1st place in their solo divisions as well – Senior solo, Ella Merritt, and Junior solo, Layla Akins.
“The Mount Juliet Dance Team’s unparalleled dedication, unwavering passion and commitment culminated into awe-inspiring routines and captivated the audience,” reads a press release.
Coached by Brooke Legens, a former professional NBA dancer for the Dallas Mavericks, and Kelly Schmidt, a teacher at Mt. Juliet High School, the team’s execution and synchronous movements not only showcased their talents and unity but elevated them to the top spots.
The Mount Juliet High School Dance Team will now compete at Nationals in Orlando, Florida in February of 2024.
