A Mt. Juliet animal shelter is asking for community support after severe flooding caused major damage to its facility and destroyed supplies used to care for hundreds of animals.
According to True Rescue, heavy rain flooded the shelter overnight, covering the entire building with water and creating what the organization described as its worst flooding event to date. Staff and volunteers spent the night removing water as it rushed into the shelter.
The organization says flooding has been an ongoing problem because the property is built into a hillside. Previous fundraising efforts paid for temporary solutions, including drainage trenches and rock barriers, but those measures failed during the latest storm.
True Rescue estimates a permanent fix to the flooding problem could cost more than $30,000. The shelter also reported losing numerous cat towers and other equipment that must be replaced immediately.
The nonprofit operates without city or county funding and relies on public donations and grants to continue its work. Since opening six years ago, True Rescue says it has taken in 7,880 animals, primarily cats and kittens, and currently cares for nearly 500 animals between its shelter and foster homes.
True Rescue is asking for donations, volunteers, foster families and adopters to help support its mission and recovery efforts. The shelter is also seeking corporate sponsors, monthly donors and grant opportunities to help fund repairs and future expansion.
