A total of 45 current and former inmates at the Wilson County Jail have successfully earned their High School Equivalency (HSE) Diplomas, marking a significant achievement in both their education and personal growth.
This accomplishment is the result of a collaboration between the Wilson County Jail and the Wilson County Schools Adult Learning Center. Inmates begin the process with an entrance exam during orientation, assessing their basic skills in math and reading. Based on the results, participants are enrolled in classes covering math, reading, language arts, science, and social studies to prepare for the HSE exam. Before taking the official HiSET or GED test, which is proctored on-site, students complete practice tests to evaluate their readiness.
Additionally, the Adult Learning Center has introduced an initiative called “Moving Forward,” designed to equip students with essential life skills for reentry into society. This program includes training in financial literacy, mental health awareness, digital literacy, and workplace skills.
This milestone not only reflects the inmates’ dedication to their education but also highlights the importance of rehabilitation and second chances in building a stronger community.
