October 1, 2024 – On the morning of September 12th, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office took swift action following a bomb threat directed toward Barry Tatum Academy (BTA). School Resource Officer (SRO) J. Moore was alerted by school administration after two voicemails containing threats were discovered in the registrar’s office. The voicemails specifically mentioned BTA.
In response, the school was promptly evacuated, and additional law enforcement resources were called to the scene. K-9 units were immediately deployed to conduct thorough sweeps of both the interior and exterior of the building. The evacuation proceeded without incident, and the building was cleared.
Through a detailed investigation led by SRO Moore, it was determined that the calls, which appeared to be AI-generated, were traced back to a current student at BTA. The student responsible was taken into custody yesterday afternoon and transported to a Juvenile Detention Center. The student now faces serious charges, including threats of mass violence and initiating false reports.
Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan expressed the office’s commitment to ensuring the safety of students and staff in schools. “Threats against our schools, whether real or fabricated, are taken extremely seriously,” said Sheriff Bryan. “Our officers acted swiftly, and we will continue to pursue and hold accountable those responsible for jeopardizing the safety and security of our schools.”
The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office continues to work closely with school officials and other law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
