Vanderbilt Dominates Charleston Southern in Season Opener

Vanderbilt crushed Charleston Southern 45-3 Saturday night at FirstBank Stadium, racking up 481 yards of offense while holding the Buccaneers to just 135 total yards.

Diego Pavia threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns, completing 20 of 25 passes. Sedrick Alexander hit 1,000 career rushing yards during the blowout win.

The Commodores scored on their first three drives for the first time since 2017. Freshman Kayleb Barnett got his first career touchdown on a nine-yard jet pass, followed by Junior Sherrill’s 12-yard TD catch and AJ Newberry’s four-yard scoring run.

Pavia hit Alexander for a 26-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to make it 28-0 at halftime. Vandy kept pouring it on in the second half with touchdowns from Makhilyn Young and Jamezell Lassiter, plus a 35-yard field goal from Brock Taylor.

The Commodores travel to Virginia Tech next Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on ACC Network. They beat the Hokies 34-27 in overtime last season.
