Three teens are in custody after traveling to Mt. Juliet in a stolen vehicle and shoplifting from Academy Sports.
On Tuesday evening, license plate readers alerted officers to a stolen 2018 Hyundai Elantra as it entered the city on Central Pike. The car had been reported stolen from Nashville on 10/15.
Officers quickly located the vehicle parked at Academy Sports and coordinated a safe apprehension plan. Once the suspects returned to the car, officers moved in and took all three into custody. Two of the teens had just stolen firearm magazines from the store.
All three—two 15-year-olds and one 18-year-old male, all from Nashville—were found in possession of alcohol, marijuana, gun magazines, and a ski mask.
Further investigation revealed that the same 18-year-old and one of the 15-year-olds had previously abandoned another stolen car in the Mt. Juliet Walmart parking lot on 10/16, which was not reported stolen yet. That vehicle had also been stolen from Nashville but broke down shortly after arriving at Walmart. The suspects then called an Uber to return to Nashville. An MJPD officer later discovered the abandoned car and confirmed it had later been reported stolen. Surveillance footage helped identify the same two teens as the ones involved in the incident.
