Previous release from December, 15, 2024:
Around 3:25 a.m., an officer patrolling West Main Street witnessed a vehicle traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. Because of weather conditions and the speed of the vehicle, it was determined not to engage in an active pursuit. Nearby units were made aware of the situation and given a vehicle description.
Before other tactics could be deployed to stop the vehicle, officers responding to the area located the vehicle crashed out right off the square. Two people were found to be in the vehicle. It was quickly determined that no other vehicles were involved. Both were transported to the hospital, one of whom was in serious condition.
Because of the seriousness of the wreck, Traffic Unit responded to the scene to investigate. Their preliminary investigation revealed that speed and alcohol are believed to be factors involved in the wreck.
The crash scene spanned over 700 feet. Fencing, shrubbery, a tree, and several light poles were damaged. Multiple businesses along the square sustained minor damage from the wreck as well.
