With the holiday shopping season about to be in full swing, Mt. Juliet Police Department is ramping up efforts to protect the community from retail crime. Operation Safe Shopper has launched with a comprehensive strategy to deter, intercept, and prevent criminal activity in Mt. Juliet’s shopping hubs.

Mt. Juliet’s largest crime challenge stems from suspects who travel to the area intending to commit retail theft. To counter this, the department is deploying more uniformed officers, undercover teams, and advanced technology to safeguard residents and visitors alike. The initiative will focus heavily on Mt. Juliet’s popular Interstate 40 shopping destinations and will continue through the New Year.

“As we enter the holiday season, we are committed to ensuring that our community feels safe and secure while shopping and enjoying time with loved ones. By increasing police presence in retail centers, we are not only working to prevent crime but also fostering a sense of reassurance for both shoppers and store employees,” said Chief Michael Mullins. “Our officers will be actively engaged, providing a visible and vigilant presence to ensure a peaceful and joyful holiday experience for all.”

Key Components of Operation Safe Shopper:

  • Increased Patrols: Uniformed officers will maintain a visible presence in and around shopping centers.
  • Zero Tolerance Policy: Shoplifting offenses will result in immediate arrest and booking.
Mobile Surveillance Towers: Positioned in parking lots for enhanced oversight and deterrence.
  • Undercover Operations: Plainclothes officers will blend into crowds to monitor and respond to suspicious activity.
  • Guardian Shield Technology: Advanced tools will scan for stolen vehicles, stolen plates, and wanted individuals.

In addition, officers will actively monitor traffic flow and signals to address congestion and keep traffic moving efficiently. Quick adjustments will be made in coordination with city traffic engineers when needed.

General Shopping Tips:

  • Report suspicious or unusual behavior to police immediately.
  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
  • Park in well-lit areas, lock your car doors, and conceal packages out of sight.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; use credit or debit cards instead.
  • Keep purses close to your body and secure wallets in an inside coat or front pocket.
  • Teach children to approach a police officer or store security if they become separated from you.

Parking Lot Safety Tips:

  • Be vigilant about your surroundings, especially when walking to your vehicle.
  • Shop with a friend or in groups for added safety.
  • Have your keys ready as you approach your car.
  • Never leave valuables or packages visible inside your vehicle.
  • If you notice suspicious activity, return to the store or a populated area and contact the police immediately.

The Mt. Juliet Police Department works tirelessly to ensure crime doesn’t take root in the community as the majority of offenders are not community residents. Through Operation Safe Shopper, officers aim to provide a safe and enjoyable shopping environment for everyone. Residents and visitors are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow safety tips, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
