Walter Leland Burgess, age 80, of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
Walt was born in Hartford, CT and was the son of the late, Carl (Gloria) Burgess and Alice Hitchcock Jones.
He served with pride in the U.S. Army. Walt was a dedicated member of Green Hill Church, where he was a member of the Care Bears Sunday School Class. Walt served on the Chainsaw Team, the Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief Team and served as a Deacon of the widows. His passion for mission trips was evident in the countless hours he spent volunteering and bringing support and aid to communities in need, from disaster-stricken areas to impoverished regions.
Walt was retired from ABF Freight System and spent many of his retirement years as an employee of Bond Memorial Chapel. His warm-hearted nature, kindness and generosity made him a beloved figure in the lives of many. We will remember his love, his laugh and the indelible mark he left on all of us.
Walt was preceded in death by his wives, Marcia Sweet Burgess and Nina Stonesifer Burgess. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Abigail Burgess and his brother, James Burgess.
He is survived by:
Twin Children – Mitchel (Kristal) Burgess and Melissa (Erik) Larsen
Brothers – Robert Burgess and Larry Burgess
Sisters – Judy Burgess and Diane Murphy
Grandchildren – Kamryn Burgess, Elizabeth Larsen, Ella Burgess and Grant Larsen
Several nieces and nephews
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Green Hill Church, 13251 Lebanon Road with Dr. Daryl Crouch and Dr. Brandon James officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Hermitage Memorial Garden. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to the Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief Fund.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Green Hill Church, a place that held a special significance in Walt’s life. Also, the family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Bond Memorial Chapel, who loved Walt like family, for their unwavering support and care during this difficult time.
