James was born on December 17, 1946, in Ortonville, Minnesota, to Wilmer and Lois Sandberg. From a young age, he had a passion for music and spent many years singing in choirs, both in school and church. In 1964, he graduated from a medical laboratory tech program in Minneapolis.

In 1979, the family returned to Milbank, SD where James established his own construction business. During this time, he also formed a band he called Shenandoah, where he shared his love for music with many.
In 2000, Jim and his family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to further his aspirations as a singer-songwriter. An accomplished writer, he had produced and written over a hundred songs and performed on many stages.
