James Donald ‘Jim’ Ferguson, entered heaven on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
Jim was born in Zephyrhills, Florida on May 21, 1934. He was followed 30 minutes later by his twin, Jon. Their parents were Lawrence Sumner and Tennie Barber Ferguson.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Hazel Ferguson Gill, Herbert Theron Ferguson, Lawrence Sumner Ferguson, Jr., and Jon Ronald Ferguson.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Arneta Howard Ferguson and children: Syble Ferguson Groover (Chuck), Rodney Lee Ferguson (Michele), and Ronda Ferguson Spena (Marten), grandchildren: Jamie Groover (Sarah Randall), Kelley Groover, Heather Petit (Shawn), Melissa Groover (Ricky), Andrew Spena, Adam Spena (Claire Melero, fiancée), Aimee Kathrine Deer (Jeremy): four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild, as well as nieces and nephews.
Jim attended Zephyrhills schools and started his working career early. In his 20s, he went to work for the US Postal Service. He worked as a clerk for 15 years, then became a rural carrier for the next 15 years. After retirement, he took up woodworking. Once Arneta retired, they relocated to Blairsville, Georgia. They became very active in First Baptist Church. Jim served on their mission team. He built many wheelchair ramps and repaired houses for those in need. In his rare downtime, he loved to fish and go out on his pontoon boat. In 2016 they moved to Mt. Juliet, Tennessee to be near family.
Jim was dearly loved by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. He always had a sweet spirit and sense of humor. He maintained both until the end.
The family would like to thank Alive Hospice and Carrick Glen Memory Care for their loving care of Jim in his final days.
Burial will be at Oakside Cemetery in Zephyrhills, Florida, on land that once was home to his family’s sawmill business.
A family graveside service will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM. Arneta will be available to receive friends for a few days at the home of Rodney Ferguson.
Visitation will be at Victory Baptist Church, 1777 Tate Lane, Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, on Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Alive Hospice or Tennessee Baptist Mission Board Disaster Relief.
