A South Carthage homemaker, Mrs. Gladys Andrews Sloan, entered into her eternal rest at 12:26 p.m. Tuesday afternoon December 31, 2024 with her son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter and great-granddaughter at her bedside at the Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital in Lebanon.
Funeral services, conducted by Bro. Ron Ralph, will be conducted Thursday afternoon January 2nd at 3 p.m. from the Carthage Chaapel of Sanderson Funeral Home and burial will follow beside her husband and son at the Pleasant Shade Cemetery.
The Sloan family will receive friends only on Thursday January 2nd from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral services at Sanderson in Carthage.
The only daughter of four children of the late Allen Darell Andrews who died November 25, 1969 at the age of 68 and Lora Grace Barton Andrews who died in 1988 at the age of 82, she was born Gladys Doris Andrews in the Halltown Community in Hartsville on March 6, 1931.
Two brothers preceded her in death, Dennis Andrews who died April 10, 1991 at the age of 54, retired Carthage real estate investor and former owner of Carthage Freight Line, Prentice Lutrell Andrews who died at the age of 69 on October 15, 1997.
As a mother and grandmother, she suffered the loss of her son, Mickey Lane Sloan who died at the age of 41 on December 18, 1995 and a grandson, Johnathan Michael Sloan who died also at the age of 41 on March 17, 2024.
She was united in marriage to Pleasant Shade Community native, Robert Dennis Sloan at the former Sanderson Presbyterian Church in the Pleasant Shade Community on July 18, 1953. The ceremony was officiated by the late Eld. Courtland Wakefield.
Her husband Dennis, a longtime typesetter for the Carthage Courier, then owned by the late Sam Neal and the late Andrew (Andy) Reid Jr., preceded her in death at the age of 79 on February 25, 2010 following almost fifty-eight years of marriage.
Mrs. Sloan retired in 1996 from Hartman Luggage in Lebanon where she did repairs on luggage and attaché cases for the well-known high-end manufacturing company.
At the age of twenty-five following her marriage to Dennis, she joined the Pleasant Shade Upper Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she retained her membership until her death.
Mrs. Sloan was a kind, soft spoken lady who adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a southern charm personality that was very pleasing to have conversation with.
Surviving is her son, Mark Sloan and wife Melissa Overstreet Sloan of the Turkey Creek Community; three grandchildren, Kaison Sloan and wife Grace Hubbard Sloan of the Pleasant Shade Community, Kolby Sloan of Carthage, Kassidy Sloan Cadenhead and husband Noah of Hartsville; three great grandchildren, Boaz and Liam Sloan, Lylah Cadenhead; brother, Hollis Andrews of Gallatin and sister-in-law, Barbara Andrews of Lafayette.
The Sloan family has requested memorials to the Pleasant Shade Cemetery Mowing Fund.
