Cheryl Ann McMahon passed away on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the age of 76, at her home in Gallatin, Tennessee, after a courageous and lengthy battle with ALS. Cheryl was born to Herschel E. Cook and Alma O Cook (Abt) November 1, 1948, in Franklin, Indiana, and spent her life surrounded by friends and family who loved her dearly.
Cheryl graduated in 1966 from Franklin Community High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Education degree from Indiana State University and her Master of Education degree from Indiana University. She was a dedicated music teacher for 35 years, spending her entire career with the Franklin Community School Corporation, where she inspired countless students with her passion for music and her unwavering commitment to education.
A longtime member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church in Greenwood, Indiana, Cheryl’s faith was an integral part of her life, and she was known for her kindness and generosity within her church community.
Cheryl moved to Gallatin, TN, to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law and beloved grandchildren, fulfilling her heartfelt desire to be a deeply involved grandmother. Her love and dedication to her family, especially her grandchildren, was evident in everything she did, and her presence in their lives brought immense joy.
Cheryl had many passions that enriched her life. She loved spending time with family and friends, and her home was always filled with laughter and love. Music was a lifelong passion, and Cheryl adored playing the piano. She cherished the moments spent playing and sharing that love of music with others. She also enjoyed cooking, playing card games, and solving puzzles—activities that brought her great joy and allowed her to connect with those she loved.
Cheryl was a kind-hearted, caring, and devoted individual whose life touched many. She will always be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family, grace in the face of adversity, as well as her infectious joy that made everyone feel welcome and loved. Cheryl was a loving daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother whose presence in the lives of her loved ones will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Jami Fugate (Danny); grandchildren, Jadan Fugate and Reese Fugate; granddog, Izzy; niece, Hillary Weigle (Troy Sphar); nephew, Brian Hollingshead (Erin); brother-in-law, Richard Hollingshead; sister-in-law, Mary Cook and countless friends near and far.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Herschel and Alma Cook; her brother, Herschel (Gene) Cook; and her sister, Sandra Hollingshead.
A celebration of Cheryl’s life is currently being planned and once everything is finalized we will be reaching out to family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cheryl McMahon Music Scholarship through the Johnson County Community Foundation (www.jccf.org).
