Lebanon, Tenn. — Phase 1 of 2 of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) improvements is in progress. The ITS project was initiated with a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant. The project’s total cost is $3.2 million, with 80 percent federally funded and with 20 percent city-matched.
“Phase 1 includes improvements to traffic signals along West Main Street and US 231 South and is currently in progress,” Mayor Rick Bell said. “Lebanon’s Transportation/Traffic Engineer Kristen Rice is leading this project, and I appreciate her experience and hard work.”
The ITS elements included in this project will consist of the following: enhanced traffic management capabilities on West Main Street and US 231 S, with the installation of fiber interconnection between signals, signal controller upgrades, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at critical intersections, ADA pedestrian signal upgrades, signal detection upgrades, a centralized software for remote signal network management, and a Traffic Management Center located at Public Works.
“The construction of the Phase 1 project will provide long-awaited and much-needed improvements to our traffic signal network on two of the City’s main corridors,” Rice said. “The signal technologies that are being installed with the project are state of the art and will allow us to better manage and maintain our traffic signal system. I appreciate the support of the Mayor and Council to prioritize traffic signal improvements, and the hard work of our Public Works department and signal technicians on this project.”
Once completed, this exciting project will reduce congestion, improve air quality, and provide much-needed technology and equipment upgrades for the city to efficiently manage traffic flow along these two strategic corridors. For example, city staff can remotely access traffic signals from the Traffic Management Center, improving response time and maintenance activities. The project will also improve connectivity and accessibility for pedestrians by providing various ADA upgrades at signalized intersections.
Phase 2 of the ITS improvements is still in the design phase.
