A unique pilot program is kicking off in La Vergne, aiming to educate, train, and prepare students to enter the fire service.

La Vergne Fire Rescue Department has partnered with La Vergne High School and Motlow Community College. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, students will be certified firefighters in the State of Tennessee with their Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certifications, as well as their Paramedic Associate of Applied Science.

Interested LHS students sent in applications to be considered for the program and, following interviews, eight were accepted and enrolled in the program. Those students then went on to complete physical agility tests and written exams. Next, they will begin a 12-week fire academy conducted by the La Vergne fire department and, upon completion of the academy, will be certified firefighters in Tennessee. The students will then be enrolled in Motlow Community College’s Paramedic Associate of Applied Science program through the Tennessee Promise.

“We are investing in our youth and preparing them for a career that is as exciting as it is rewarding,” says Fire Chief Ronny Beasley. “We want to set our students up for success and with this training and education under their belts, they could very likely go on to make upwards of $60k as a firefighter or paramedic anywhere in the country.”

The students enrolled in the program will participate in a Signing Day on February 13 to commit to the program.
