The Board of Education has chosen Travis Mayfield as the new Director of Schools with a 5-1 approval vote during a Special Called Meeting at the ATC this past week. More School News
He is no stranger to Wilson County Schools as he’s served as the Deputy Director of Operations since July of 2022. Prior to that he was principal at Wilson Central High School for seven years. While there, WCHS achieved numerous state and national awards/honors.
With over two decades of Education experience ranging from classroom teacher to administrative and leadership roles, he’s excited to get started with the district’s top job very soon.
“The responsibly is one that I don’t take lightly,” says Mr. Mayfield. “I will do all that I can to serve our district in the best way possible. I want to say thank you to the Board for their trust and support in selecting me for this position.”
Earlier this year, current Director Mr. Jeff Luttrell announced his intentions to retire at the end of June. Named Director back in 2021, he will finish his 30+ year career with many high level achievements as both an administrator and as Director.
“As many already know, I have been very hands-off and not involved in this search and hiring process, but to know that Mr. Mayfield was chosen by the Board to lead this district after my departure, I have full faith that our students, families and employees are in very good hands,” said Mr. Luttrell. “This job is an enormous responsibility, but he has so many valuable career experiences that I know will equip him well for this role. I wish him the very best and he knows that he can always call upon me at any time during this transitional period.”
Throughout the past several weeks the Board considered close to a dozen applications and then collectively worked that list down to a top five. Those top five candidates were then narrowed down to a final two following the first round of interviews. Final interviews were conducted before the Board last week.
Mr. Mayfield will officially take over WCS Director duties on July 1st.
